Es pasado fin de semana nos fuimos a
disfrutar de la cabalgata de San Patricio. En esta zona residen muchísimos inmigrantes
procedentes de Irlanda, por lo que es un día muy festejado. De hecho la
cabalgata en sí ha durado hora y media, y antes aun hemos aprovechado para ver
los preparativos y pasearnos por todo Old Town, disfrutando del panorama: La
gente es super cercana y desde luego se notaba en las calles el ambiente
festivo.
El día de San Patricio es el 17 de
marzo, lo sé, pero ya que aquí lo celebran tanto y saben que ese día les
quitarán el protagonismo cabalgatas como las de Washington o NY, en Alexandria
se celebra el día 1. Así ya vamos calentando motores para el gran día:)
De qué va la cabalgata... pues un poco
de todo. Todo aquel que quiera/ tenga algo que lucir puede participar: hemos
visto girl scouts, patinadoras, políticos en plena campaña, a todo el escuadrón
de policía, la brigada de bomberos, irlandeses, franceses, bolivianos, al
ejercito de la guerra civil americana... para llenar 1 hora y media hace
falta mucho, jaja.
Pero lo cierto es que ha sido de lo más
entretenido y constantemente te regalan cosas: yo he llegado a casa con 3
collares, un sombrerito y los bolsillos llenos de caramelos.
Así que ya con los motores cargados
para celebrar San Patrick, que aun queda mucho y lo mejor está por llegar :)
Last weekend we went to enjoy the St Patrick's Parade. A lot of
Irish people live in this area, that is the reason why this is a huge
celebration. Actually the parade lasted for one and a half hours, and before it
started we enjoyed watching the preparations and walking around the whole Old
Town area, enjoying the sights: people here are really friendly and there was an
amazing festive atmosphere.
I know... St Patrick’s Day is March 17th, but here it
is a big celebration, and they know that that day the focus will be on the
parades in cities like Washington DC or NYC, that is why in Alexandria the
parade is the 1st. So, we are already getting ready for the big day!
About the parade... anything goes J. Anyone
who wants to or has anything to share can participate: we saw Girl Scouts,
roller skaters, politicians campaigning, the whole police force, the
firefighters, Irish, French and Bolivian people, the American Civil War
re-enactors, you need a lot of things for a parade that is and hour and a half,
lol.
It was a fun event and they were constantly giving out different
stuff: I arrived home with three necklaces, a little hat and pockets full of
candy.
We are ready for St. Patrick, there will be a lot more and the
best is still coming J
